Are there people or animals who want to form unlikely friendships with you? Is there someone who is very different from you but could enrich your life in a unique way?

The Booger Dog

Pamela Jenkins

Henryetta, Oklahoma

We called him The Booger. I remember the spring morning when my family drove to a friend’s home in the country to see their litter of purebred beagle puppies. We were hoping to adopt one into our family but were having a hard time deciding which puppy was the pick of the litter. Each one was bright-eyed and sweet and so huggable. Then my son saw one large puppy that didn’t look anything at all like his brothers and sisters. He said, “Hey, look at that little booger over there!” My son insisted on taking home the oddball of the group. Try as I might to call the puppy a more noble name like Duke or King, the term Booger just seemed to fit him better.

Our new puppy looked like a short Saint Bernard with wiry hair and flyaway ears. From his first day in our home, he was all teeth and puddles, mischief and destruction. He could have been a poster puppy for obedience training gone wild. A rolled-up newspaper meant a fine game of catch-me-if-you-can. A scolding seemed to fall on deaf floppy ears. But with his bright eyes, flapping tongue, and wagging tail, he looked so funny that it was hard for me to stay mad at him. It never occurred to The Booger that he could be in trouble.

Soon his sharp, little puppy barks matured into deep, throaty bays. An autumn leaf blowing across the yard at night was reason enough for The Booger to sound the alarm and raise the family from our sleep. He dug holes in the garden with joyful abandon. He freely watered the begonias and geraniums. Anything left within his reach was buried, carried under the house, or devoured. The Booger welcomed door-to-door salesmen. He liked children and hated baths. He preferred his cats to be surprised and running. When I took The Booger on a country walk one day, I spent ten minutes enjoying the walk and the next two hours searching and calling for him.
